Congratulations to students at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic School and Santa Fe Catholic High School

Harley S., a seventh grader at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic School won Grand Prize in the USCCB’s National Catholic Campaign for Human Development Multi-Media Arts Contest. Harley submitted “The Cross of Poverty” interactive sculpture. She won a prize of $500 and a matching grant to the CCHD-group of her choice. The award will be given at the NCCYM Conference in Orlando, Nov 29 – Dec. 1. Congratulations to Harley!
Third place for grades 10-12 was won by Miss Coco W. who attends Santa Fe Catholic High School in Lakeland. She submitted a painting entitled “Support the Poor.” She received $250 and a matching grant to a CCHD-group of her choice. Congratulations to Coco!
We should be very proud of our student winners. They did an outstanding job of integrating the theme for this year which was “Put Faith in Action! Uproot Poverty Together”. Thank you to all of our student entrants. It is wonderful that you are using your artistic gifts from God to bring attention to a such a pervasive social problem.

Saint Brendan School Selected as Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History Affiliate School

Ormond Beach, FL (January 3, 2012)—Students and educators at Saint Brendan School in Ormond Beach had reason to celebrate today as they received word that they have been named an Affiliate School by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. After a competitive selection process, Saint Brendan School joins a network of schools across the nation committed to rigorous, document-based history education. Students and teachers at Saint Brendan School will receive direct access to Gilder Lehrman’s award-winning resources for teachers and students. Saint Brendan School teachers will have an open gateway to the Gilder Lehrman Institute’s extensive collection of over 60,000 documents illustrating the history of the United States through a members-only web portal. This includes access to recorded lectures and podcasts by noted historians, priority standing for summer professional development seminars, assistance with creating history clubs, support in pursuing grant opportunities, and other resources for Saint Brendan School students. Lizanne Swaringen, the middle school social studies teacher, is thrilled about being selected as an affiliate school. “Access to The Gilder Lehrman Institute’s resources will be so valuable to my students. I truly appreciate this opportunity to make history come alive for them through the various programs now available to us.”
Saint Brendan's Eighth Grade visited the home-bound
Saint Brendan's Eighth Grade visited the home-bound and delivered handmade cards and poinsettias to twenty-five people in the Ormond Beach area. This is the ninth year teacher, Lizanne Swaringen, has done this project. "It means so much to the people as well as my students. I can't think of a better way to spread the Christmas message." After the students made their deliveries, they stopped at The Grand Villa in Ormond to visit, interview, and sing to the residents.

Congratulates 11 middle school students as new members of the National Junior Art Honor Society. Mrs. Katie Senkarik, Fr. Matt Mello and Dr. Christopher Benedetti assisted Mikael Cruz with the traditional induction ceremony. New members are: Andrea A., Cullen B., Jack C., Rachel J., Cathy J., Emily M., Xavier V., Tesia D., Dylan K., Kamden R. and Zachary S. A reception was held in the library for the students and their families following the event. The students will have a gallery show in March at Arts on the Park in downtown Lakeland.

Congratulations to Kristina Janolo, she is the new Miss Florida!
A graduate of Bishop Moore Catholic High School, Class of 2001 and St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School, Class of 2003, has won the Miss Florida 2011 and will compete in the 2012 Miss America pageant.
Church of the Resurrection Catholic School
Our Church of the Resurrection Catholic School Eagles continue to 'Soar to New Heights" at Lakeland's only U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon School! Congratulations to Andrew N., an eighth grader, in winning first place in the engineering category at the Florida State Science and Engineering Fair in Orlando. Over 53, 000 middle school students across the state entered this annual competition and is the largest competition in the State of Florida. In addition, Andrew won on a monetary gift from the Florida Museum of National History. Adam B., Katherine C., Derek P. and Joseph P. have qualified for state recognition in the Duke Talent Identification Program 2011 7th Grade Talent Search. These students will be honored at a special ceremony in early June. In addition, Derek P. and Keegan S. have been invited to participate in the Academy for Summer Studies and Katherine C., Adam B. and Joseph P. have earned the privilege to attend the Center for Summer Studies.

Congratulations to Best of Show winner, Evita L., an eighth grade student at Holy Family Catholic School in Orlando.

The Office of Catholic Schools congratulates the winners and participants in the Seventh Diocesan Elementary Art Show which was held on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at Bishop Moore Catholic High School in Orlando. We were pleased to welcome the student artists and their families to view the juried event which celebrates the fine arts in grades Kindergarten through Eighth. Each of the twenty-six elementary schools participating entered four selected pieces of art. Categories were as follows: Drawing (grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8); Painting (grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8); Mixed Media (grades K-2, 3-5 and 6-8), Three-Dimensional (grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8).

Ascension Catholic School in Melbourne
Students from Ascension Catholic School took part in the Brevard County Mainland Regional Science and Engineering Fair. The Ascension students garnered many awards including both Best of Show awards in the Junior Division! Students also earned 5 first place awards, 3 third place awards, 3 fourth place awards as well as several special awards!

Resurrection Catholic School
Church of the Resurrection Catholic School is proud to announce that Abigail T. (gr. 7), was recently notified by the Lakeland Chapter of the Daughters of the American revolution that her essay on Paul Revere took FIRST PLACE in the annual State of Florida essay contest. Abigail and her parents will be honored at the state conference later in the spring. Andrew E. (gr. 8) has qualified to participate at the state level of the National Geographic Bee to be held at Jacksonville University. Only 100 students in the state of Florida have qualified for this prestigious event.
Congratulations to the new inductees into the National Junior Honor Society at Church of the Resurrection Catholic School. These new members are: Austin A., Alyssa A., Dana M., Ryan A., Jennifer B., Adam B., Stephen B., Katherine C., Tesia D., Adrianna H., Michael M., Magdalina M., Joseph P., Keegan S., Claudia S., Abigail T., Madeline T. and Juliana W.. These students meet or exceed the criteria for membership including a 94% average of four quarters before selection, and an evaluation of character, citizenship, leadership and service.
2010-2011 Voice of Democracy
The Veterans of Foreign Wars is proud to announce the district winners of the 2010-2011 Voice of Democracy audio-essay competition. This year's theme is "Does My Generation Have a Role in America's Future?" Our Lady of Lourdes students in Melbourne entered the contest again this year. Meagan, a 6th grader won VFW Post 4536 and District 8 first place. Kylie, her sister who won last year as an 8th grader, entered and won too. They can’t remember having sisters win at the same time.

It was a clean sweep for Church of the Resurrection Catholic School as they earned 1st place in each grade level 5-8 of the Daughters of the American Revolution Essay Contest. Winners: Katilyn K., Gr. 5, Luke S., Gr. 6, Abigail T., Gr. 7, Anna S., Gr. 8 and their Social Studies teachers Mrs. Ferreri and Miss Unser will be invited to the awards ceremony in early February.
